Although the Teacup Yorkie isn’t considered to be a breed of its own, this hasn’t stopped them from capturing the hearts of thousands of American dog lovers. Small, energetic and personable, the Teacup Yorkie is one of the most sought after of all the Yorkshire Terrier types.

The Teacup Yorkie isn’t technically considered a breed on its own. Instead, they are Yorkshire Terriers bred specifically for their small (or “teacup”) size. Despite being small in stature, however, Teacup Yorkies are known for being very energetic, extremely intelligent and exceptionally bold.

While they generally get along well with other dogs, they are also quick to try to establish leadership as the alpha dog. In keeping with this spunky personality, Teacup Yorkies aren’t afraid to challenge larger dogs, and this can get them into trouble. It’s also another reason they are not recommended for families with small children.

Their keen sense of hearing makes them excellent watchdogs, as they will alert the household of the slightest sound. This means that they can be a bit noisy, and this needs to be taken into consideration if you have close neighbors. Teacup Yorkies are also loyal to a fault, and are generally very protective of those that care for them.

Charming and intelligent, the Teacup Yorkie is extremely quick to pick up new commands and learn new tricks from their owner. Their small size makes them ideal for apartment living, but their quick minds means that they can bored quickly, so it is necessary to provide them with several toys and distractions to keep them occupied. Because of these traits, Teacup Yorkies do exceptionally well in competitive sports, as they have no problems understanding and carrying out their handler’s commands.

They are also fiercely loyal and territorial, and will make their owner aware of even the slightest possibility of intruders, even defending them if necessary.

All in all, Yorkshire Terrier types of all kinds make good household pets for families with older children. With its lively, energetic personality and generally sweet disposition, the Teacup Yorkie fits in well in any home. Usually not weighing more than seven pounds, their small size makes them easy to carry and take on trips. And since they get on well with other animals, they will adjust well to multi-animal homes, or families with older, responsible children.

Researching the breed before you buy is recommended. Once you decide that you’d like to own one, a quick search on the Internet will provide hundreds of websites dedicated to providing Yorkshire Terrier information to prospective owners. You’ll also find lists of reputable breeders and signs of illness to look for when you go to select your puppy. By arming yourself beforehand with the facts and health issues that Teacup Yorkies are prone to, you’ll ensure that you’re getting a healthy, happy puppy.
